Many defenses protected the massive door that led to Burning Forge, the great citadel of the dwarves—from vats of burning oil to pour down the narrow mountain stairway to ballistae peering through hidden crevices in the mountainside. But chief among the outer defenses of the city were the Thunderhoof Cavalry. These dwarves were trained from a young age to master the Worldsend Mountain Range’s brutal Dire Boars. Unlike many among the Burning Forge militia, who only confronted the daylight a few hours a year, the Thunderhoof Cavalry left regularly to patrol the surrounding mountainside and ensure that enemies did not wander too close to the entrances of the city. The Thunderhoof knights were known as noble protectors in the surrounding villages, but nonetheless feared for their might; a Thunderhoof knight at full gallop could smash a goblin’s head from its shoulders with a single hammer swing.

The Thunderhoof cavalry followed their leaders relentlessly into the thickest of battles. Many a foe was smashed into the air by Maeve Sunderstone, only to be immediately ridden down under the hammers and pikes of the line of Thunderhooves charging behind her.

The day that they followed Maeve into the sea of skeletons scratching against their door, the Thunderhooves were summoned one by one from the verge of death by the Valkyrie Aquilla to join her growing ranks of dwarves on Valhalla. The Thunderhoof knights were filled with dismay—they knew that for every rider summoned to Valhalla, there was one less knight standing between the Esenwein army and the Burning Forge, the very heart of dwarven civilization on Feylund.

In the years since their arrival on Valhalla, though, rumors have abounded. That Cyprien Esenwein had himself been summoned by the Valkyrie Utgar, and later assassinated on Utgar’s orders. That Sonya Esenwein, his wicked widow, now holds a high position in the ranks of the New Alliance. And the Thunderhoof cavalry know that as long as any Esenwein lives on Valhalla, they will mount their steeds and ride against them, for Burning Forge, for Feylund, and for the Verdant Pact!

The Thunderhoof Cavalry are available in the Thunderhoof Cavalry army expansion. Pre-order now for a February 2027 release!
