The Green Knight
‘Twas the twelfth night of the winter feast in the oaken halls of Olendra, in the eighth age of Feylund, and the elven prince Galrain Gwynn held court late in the winter’s night. He held high his silver blade and declared that he would best in sport or duel any who were gathered at the feast, and that even among all the old gods of Feylund there was not to be found such a champion as he.
The doors bowed inward then, and carried from some snow-covered glen was a knight bedecked in verdant green, who spake thus:
“I will accept your challenge as a duel. You may strike first, unchallenged. One blow, no tricks. Then, I will return the blow to you in equal measure.”
Galrain was flustered at first to be challenged thus in front of all of his court, but his smile grew wide. If he struck strong and pure, there would be no blow to return, nor knight of green to return it. And so he took the green knight’s axe and held it aloft, and brought it down upon the knight’s neck with wroth.
As the knight fell against the stones, Galrain recoiled. Two beetle wings of emerald green adorned his back. No ordinary knight was he, but a fey, descended from a Moon of Harvest. Such legends had not walked Feylund in six ages. Why, now, was he visited thus?
The knight’s head fell free of his body. But then two green flames lit in the knight’s hollow sockets, a vengeful fire, and his body stood up straight, and lifted his own head from the floor. A wicked grin was upon his face, and he spake thus to the court:
“Thy hath dealt thine blow, young prince. And now, I shall deliver mine.”
As the elven prince’s head rolled across the stones, the green knight departed into the winter mists, and though he was pursued by the Order of the Crimson Sigil and the court’s own Banisher, only a strange green light rising into the sky towards the shrouded seelie moon was to be found.
