The navigation pings of the Omnicron stealth submersible and the ragged breaths of the soldiers were now, finally, all that could be heard.

The Mariedians’ escape had been narrow. They had lost dozens during their desperate raid on the ZETTI data center, but they had made off with their goal. They now possessed the full schematics of the largest of the ZETTI great forges. They needed only to get those schematics to Fragger, and surely he could find a way to exploit them somehow. It was a slim hope, but it was hope.

Hope, unfortunately, is fleeting.

The all-hands alert rang. Somehow, a ZETTI raidcraft had stumbled across them. Unlucky. Their submersible was hard to track but not fast. Running was not an option.

With a thud, the ZETTI raidcraft clamped onto the rear of the submersible. The glow of a plasma cutter cut into the dark of the hold.

“For Mariedian,” a soldier muttered.

“For the future!” the others cheered.

A large chunk of hull shot into the hold followed by death on legs.

Though the great machine bore some scrap of a soul deep in its core, that scrap had long since been twisted beyond recognition. Deathwalkers knew only the arithmetic of death. Shot after shot, Mariedians fell as the machine pushed toward the bridge. They returned fire, but their blasts ricocheted off of the machine’s dark plating.

However, in that twisting of the soul, a Deathwalker begins to become predictable, and Mariedians are clever. As several of the Mariedians fell to the Deathwalker’s barrage, they began to learn its patterns. It began having a harder time landing shots, and with every shot the Mariedians took, they inched closer to striking a weak spot.

KRAN-KOOOM

The Deathwalker fell, soul core extinguished.

At great cost, they’d slain the Deathwalker. They were now home free to bring their precious data to the rest of the resistance.

“For Mariedian! For the future!”

A second Soulborg had stepped aboard. Smaller and sleeker, it calmly dodged their blasts as it walked to the center of the hold, beeped one last time, and detonated.
