Heart of Hrungnir
Excerpt from The Epic of Hrungnir, lines 4194-4212. Translated by Kilkorax of Revna.
As he had met his end a hero, his people built him a great mound.
They filled it with many great relics, himself to rest beside.
He would be buried deep beneath ground, whence he was once born.
In life, he had given his thanes great treasure, so they gave him now theirs.
His mortal corpse glittered with numerous bands of gold melted and reforged.
From Valhalla the riches were dug, and to it those riches would return.
As he had cared for his people, they cared for his person then.
With greatest diligence, his priests cured his skin and dried his bones,
such that posterity would know their greatest king was thus preserved.
In his life Hrungnir had in equal measure known love and shown it.
So, his true and just heart they enshrined in its own great jar,
bidding that, come Ragnarok, it may beat again for the Giants.
As his deeds had no match, his family preserved his memory.
Into each strip that wraps his body they wove the ode you read,
such that he may proclaim his legacy in the lands beyond this place.
So, here lies Hrungnir, king on high.
Of all the Giants to have walked, he was greatest,
dearest to his people, and deadliest to his foes.
