Head of Hrungnir

Excerpt from The Epic of Hrungnir, lines 3590-3601. Translated by Kilkorax of Revna.

So, even the best of all great Giants must bow to fate.

He had long known how he would go to his doom, as his gift of sight had shown him.

He had reigned over his people for a long many prosperous years.

He had fathered many children and filled his peoples’ mead halls

with abundance and glittering gold to last them ample generations.

When enemies of giants had assaulted his kingdom, he had avenged them.

Durgeth, Erilar, and Dzu-teh all tried him and all died in his grim gaze.

So too would his final battle cement his legacy as a king feared and beloved.

He gathered his finest thanes, clad fully in glittering rings of mail.

To each of them he bestowed a weapon, legendary blades all, and battle-tested.

Then, atop mighty Gullfaxi he rode into battle to greet his death.
