HANDS of Hrungnir
Excerpt from The Epic of Hrungnir, lines 1197-1212. Translated by Kilkorax of Revna.
The fierce king Hrungnir was named Father of Stones,
for the shining gems he would gift unto his worthy thanes,
and for the mighty boulders his hands bore toward his enemies.
The Giants’ foes, loathsome Erilar, would fly at Hrungnir,
seeking his flesh with their shining blades.
Twelve and twenty times they battled thus.
High above the land, their arrogant city loomed.
They pestered the Giants, belittling Hrungnir’s gift of prophecy.
They thought themselves safe out of reach in the sky,
so he took up a great stone, and with a heaving toss,
dealt their citadel a blow that sent bits of it raining down.
Six of them came at him, down from their sky-fort to claim his life and loot his land.
Before their glinting swords rent flesh, he grasped a pair of them.
With a show of might he slammed his hands together.
Where there were six, none more sucked breath.
